New Who
posted by Rob on April 5, 2010 09:05 AM

Just in case anyone would like my non-spoilery verdict on the first new episode of Doctor Who, here it is:
| New doctor | Not sure yet |
| Scriptwriting | Brilliant!* |
| New companion | Brilliant! |
| Rescored theme music | Not too impressed |
| Optimism levels | High |
*clever interlocking plot points that actually make sense, nicely handled pivotal character moments and a welcome absence of overwhelming existential angst.

I also concur. Was moderately impressed with the new doctor (who had clearly been asked to try out funny, serious, scatty, and other emotions throughout, which is a bit of an ask on your first episode out), companion girl seemed good, plot made sense (in doctor who!? amazing...) although it wasn't quite sure whether it wanted to be a small village issue (for creepiness) or an epic, world-ending threat (for spectacle).
Nice period detail, especially in the opening parts in the house (which already reminded me of 'Blink'), some good acting and dialogue, and especially no 11th hour MacGuffin to 'fix' everything means its a good start.
Plus next week - Spitfires in Space! Doesn't get any better than that.
