Plane troubling
posted by Rob on March 4, 2010 11:58 AM
Here's a slightly troubling thing: link. Go there and wait 20 seconds. It's a map of Europe with the positions of passenger planes superimposed. Maybe it's just the fact that they are piled up on top of each other (not really, just on the map) that bothers me. Or that it looks like such a mess - or even like a plane feeding frenzy. Anyway, file it under 'oddly disconcerting'.

Why do I suddenly feel like playing "Jacks"?

I saw an image like this years ago. That one was more of an air traffic control image, rather than a tidy graphic like this, of all the planes in flight in the US at any given time. I actually found it quite comforting; if there are THAT MANY in the air at every moment of every day, and there are only a few crashes a year, they must actually be fairly safe to fly in.

the planes look like sharks, that's the problem.

I think the other problem is that each plane is the size of Berkshire so it carries a million passengers (or more).

Good point, Jenn. And I totally shouldn't have gone on to watch this video clip for that very reason. link

Maybe it's just me, but I kind of found it cool. I'll have to find a similar map for NYC. If that doesn't scare the pants off of me -- figuratively, of course --, then nothing will.

There aren't many planes on the map this time of the morning. I do think the site is very clever though and very 'Big Brother'-ish.
