Pres. Quote
posted by Rob on April 30, 2009 08:35 AM

Here's the sort of thing I like to hear U.S. presidents say:
"I was struck by an article that I was reading the other day talking about the fact that the British, during World War Two, when London was being bombed to smithereens, had 200 or so detainees. And Churchill said 'we don't torture', when all of the British people were being subjected to unimaginable risk and threat. And the reason was that Churchill understood you start taking shortcuts, and over time, that corrodes what's best in a people. It corrodes the character of a country."

Rob, the source of Obama's quote on Churchill and torture is suspiciously lacking. Many folks have been hunting for it for the past several hours--all to no avail. There's a lot of fiction in most of the man's speeches, but he sure is a talented whiz with a teleprompter!

Ian, Churchill supported the gassing of the Kurds and he bombed civilian targets in Germany. But he had principles too and he's one of the few figures the left and right both respect. If Obama made that article up, that's even more impressive than him quoting it, because you can't very well come out and say "That's nonsense. Churchill loved torture." And it was the sentiment I was applauding, not the source.

I'm thinking Obama was trying to make nice removing Churchill's statue from the White House and sending back to you guys.
According to Jake Tapper at ABC News, Churchill didn't have a public stance on torture, but used it nonetheless.
Obama has chosen to weaken America but publishing those documents. Take waterboarding off unless dire -- ok -- but don't remove completely. Ask the CIA how good there feeling now.
Churchill did what he needed to do to keep England alive. Period.
Patriotic Americans see him as a role model for guts under fire. "Finest hour" says it all. Defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. That is bravery in anyone, and a rare quality in a leader these days.
