Wigging the hell out
posted by Rob on December 3, 2008 03:54 PM
You spend your days with books. Books are static, visually uniform and very few people have phobias about them. Maybe that means you're mentally well-balanced, and it will take more than a mere image to ruffle your feathers. Or maybe being around books has failed to prepare you for the 'real' world. It's made you bookish: delicate, sensitive, easily alarmed. Whichever it is, consider whether or not you have any crab-related hangups before clicking on the picture that accompanies this post. Doing so will take you to a picture of that critter as you might encounter it in real life - if you lived in Guam. (Original link nicked from BoingBoing.)

Don't look now, Rob, but there's one. . . right. . . BEHINDYOUOHMYGOD!

When I wrote this post, I so so so nearly put that it was a shame that there was one right behind Anna. We have but the one lame joke and we pass it around repeatedly. Sigh. But also snigger.

AAAAH!

But coconut crabs are SO COOL! They can actually get into coconuts. Without opposable thumbs, or hammers and chisels, or anything else that humans have (and even we can still barely get into coconuts).
And because they survive on coconuts, they are DELICIOUS. Which is why there are very strict limits on catching them for food.

Wait, Katharine, are you saying that coconut crabs might actually be coconut flavoured? I have to say, though, the thought that they can get into coconuts makes me alarmed. After all, my head is a bit coconut-like. Though cleverer.

I don't know if they have an actual coconut flavour, but they are rumoured to be so delicious that the GIs in WWII that were stationed where coconut crabs are native nearly wiped them out entirely.

I may not be able to open a coconut with my bare hands, but at least I can get into a dustbin...
(when I say get into, I don't mean... oh, never mind.)
