If there's one thing I want you to learn today it is this

Ellipsis.jpg

That ellipses have only three dots. Like this...Not like this.......................

Got it? Three dots (plus whatever following piece of punctuation is required, which can include a full stop).

How many dots?

There may be a test on this, later.

Dear me, you're at the grumpy stage of pregnancy - not long now!

Ha! I had a question about dashes and ellipses recently, on my newer blog* (mind you, my older one is only three months old). I answered it, was very pleased with myself... and consequently got a whole shedload of emails from my friends telling me I'm a punctuation nerd.

I found Teresa Nielsen Hayden's essay** On Copyediting fascinating, funny and clear: I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing, in any form.

There is no hope for me.

**For those who don't know, Teresa runs the excellent Making Light blog, with her husband Patrick; they both work(ed) for Tor in America, are all-round good guys, and that particular essay is included in Teresa's book, Making Book. She's in hospital at the moment, following a heart attack, and has blogged from her bed. You just can't keep that woman down.

I will certainly get grumpy if people don't stop ascribing my every state of mind, comment and opinion to my pregnancy...

(note the correct number of dots in the ellipsis, there.)

Now that's a truly grumpy response ..........!
