At last, a vaguely book-related post. Don't you love firmware updates? No? Well, my Sony e-book reader has a firmware update available for it and another due soon. So I download a file, load it onto the reader, and then it can do things it couldn't do before. Such as 1) reflow PDFs and 2) work with books stored in the .epub format. So without spending any money, I have a more capable device than before. (And yes, I know that it would have been nice if those features had been available from the start).

And even read my novel on it, you know ...

Its a very long time since I had to do a firmware update on any paper book I own.

Got my hands on an Iliad e-reader the other week and had to reboot it because it crashed. I've never had a paper book crash on me.

Trite I know...but irresistable.

Matthew, I do think one has to cast a firmware update as a fix for a problem to see the lack of them as a good thing. If you see them as adding new features beyond what you paid for, a lack of them is surely a bad thing. But crashing is definitely bad; I'll give you that.

Matthew, you amuse me.
