He pootles around most evenings, whiffling his nose, about a foot from the back door. He is a poppet. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what life in the countryside is like.

How do we know it's a chap? It might be Mrs (or Ms) Tiggywinkle. Wait till you're woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of hedgehogs bonking. They do it very carefully, apparently.
Just catching up -- congrats on your imminent happy event. And your new house in the country, a lovely place to bring up children!
