Weekend Reviews
posted by Rob on April 8, 2008 08:57 AM

A couple of belated reviews of weekend events. First the weather. There was thick snow. It was superb. My reaction to it was so joyous and wide-eyed it really does make me think that I need to go and live in Canada. Plus who wouldn't want to live in Canada?
Secondly, Doctor Who. This Guardian reviewer says it all. Running, shouting, sonic screwdrivers, rowing relatives. Unless the only criteria for success was 'must sound exciting when heard from the next room' I would have to rate it as a clanging gong, an empty vessel. (Psst. RTD, read my script. See how it's better than yours? Commission me. (Hmmm, that's probably not the way to get a job)).

Aw, I quite enjoyed Doc Who, on its own terms, like. I got drawn in despite myself. But!
a) There is a convincing thesis to be written about how this show is really contemptuous of overweight people.
b) The aliens looked too much like they'd been made for adaptation as toys (which they had, of course)...
and c) I wish Billie was still the assistant :(

Oh, I hated it! Thought it was dreadful!
I'm off to read your script now Rob ...
Rob -- correct me here: didn't you once write that you kinda hated Torchwood!?

Mark, I might have once or twice mentioned that Torchwood is some of the worst television I've ever seen. Season One gets an 'F', Season Two gets a 'D-'. I'd still like to write for it though. To fix it.

Oh, I was happy enough, given it was mostly concerned with reintroducing Donna (potentially, not the disastrous misplacement I thought Tate might be). The lack of jeopardy is worth commenting on, but as long as this isn't the tone for the season I'll accept it as a cheery hello ahead of getting down to business.
It's been a while since a Davies script for the show has really shone though...
