Epic

Check this out: Quercus have bought a 19-book epic. For their sakes I hope the first one doesn't tank. Imagine having to publish 18 books knowing they're not going to work.
They have more balls than me. But then, I'm a pregnant lady, so we shouldn't be too surprised about that.

Wow! But I think people may buy the first volume on curiosity alone. I probably will.
(Reading The Red Men, impressed so far despite the fact that you never did respond to my two emails about a certain offer a while back.)

I did reply, Lee!

I do love the idea of an epic. 19 books is fairly sweeping stuff. The bravery of commissioning it is impressive!

Fascinating reading Emma. Following your interesting updates on Twitter -- very good!

OT: Then apologies, Em. I never received the reply. No matter, now. (I wasn't being nasty, just indulging in some gentle teasing.) I'm enjoying The Red Men and will probably blog about it at some point. It's interesting that de Abaitua and I have chosen similar premises but approached everything so differently in our novels. And he can write!

This is exciting news! The first eight volumes in this series were originally published in the 1990s and I've always meant to pick them up. Huzzah!

Wow. I'm trying to think of examples of this happening elsewhere...do sci-fi series like Wheel of Time get published book by book, or does the author explain that he's going to write 2,000,000 words beforehand and he expects you to put them all in print?
