Mark at 5th Estate asked me to contribute to a love story post, which in turn links back here. My contribution was about Oscar Wilde's The Nightingale and The Rose, one of my favourite short stories. If you'd like to read the whole story, here it is.

Gosh, where to begin with this? have just whiled away half an hour of writing (or should that be displacement activity?) time looking through my bookshelves. I love anything on the Beauty and the Beast theme - in the realm of myths, fairytales and moral tales a la Rose and Nightingale. But the best love story I've read in recent years is Kathryn Harrison's 'A Thousand Orange Trees'. It's amazing.

Talking of 'it gets me every time', it has to be Brief Encounter, however many times I've seen it. Two buttoned-up, thoroughly decent lovers, a short bright flowering of passion followed by the pain of honorable separation and a farewell that is thwarted. Sniff. There I go again . . .
