Well you would, wouldn't you?

Forgive the fuzziness* (well it was pre-coffee, after all) but I thought I'd share this packaging. How can you deny yourself Super Premium Limited Edition One Time Only Get It Whilst It's Hot? I love the blatant hyperbole - and it got me to buy. It's not bad, but I have to say I was expecting better given the marketing.

Reminds me of something I was reading the other day about modern consumerism, and the idea that you can upgrade anything. Water, coffee, loo-roll - these things used to be commodities but marketeers have created a 'supertier' offering. I have a hunch that's an area of books that isn't currently exploited - except maybe by the Folio Society - but would make sense. Someone pass me the gold leaf.

Well, certainly in my beloved horror, the uber-book is a thriving independant industry - signed, limited edition runs on high quality paper, with specially commissioned art, beautiful endpapers, traycased, etc, etc...

Check the likes of Cemetery Dance Publishing or Necessary Evil Press (their lettered editions are extraordinarily beautiful things), PS Publishing in the UK, and so forth.

You guys could do worse than having a think about doing similar high-end, limited runs of some of your paperbacks (the Wellington and McBride stuff would appeal to the buyers of these, very much - although I believe Mike at least has already pursued this elsewhere?).

Worth thinking about for the future - there's a nice top up to be made if you can put out a high end product (for book fetishists like me...)
