Persuaded

dalek only.jpgFret not, my pretties. The dalek in the picture is only for purposes of scale. You're quite safe.

I've finally tracked down a copy of Persuasion that suits me. See, here it is, with the Woolwich Ferry alongside to help you judge its size. To avoid confusion, you need to bear in mind that the ferry is further away.

Isn't it nice. But throw away the paper cover (by thoughtfully recycling it) and the result is even better. I've included a typical household Dalek in the background to give you a sense of perspective here.

This picture also enables you to see that the dalek in question is safely shackled (either that or it's the size of my thumb and has a keychain sticking out of its head).

Gilt-edged pages, handsome printing, a non-wibblin, non-horrible cover. And all for £6.99. Bliss.

(My only worry is that it's so cheap something nasty might be going on. Baby pandas working forty-hour shifts sewing bindings. Or something like that.)

Rob, you didn't mention the silk ribbon bookmark!
I love these little books, and am gathering quite a collection of them... but, yes, I do worry how they manage to produce them so cheaply. Are you doing anything to find out?

Dee

A good point, Dee. Those books do have long, slinky red bookmarks, like the tongue of some exotic, silky snake.

And when I get a moment I will try to contact someone at Imago about their ethics policy.

Lovely Luci at Imago has this to say in response to our query:

"It’s great to hear that the little classics are proving to be so popular with your blog readers. The print runs are often very big, as they’ve been successful in many territories, and this allows us to negotiate some very sharp printing prices. Given the low price, I guess it’s no surprise that people ask questions about where and how they are manufactured. However, I’m glad to report that no baby pandas were exploited during the manufacturing of this product!

Throughout Imago’s history we have always checked our print sources carefully to ensure our suppliers work ethically. In fact Richard Hayes, one of Imago’s founders, was instrumental in the formation of PRELIMS whose purpose is to create a common internationally recognised social accountability standard. Further details can be found on our website www.imago.co.uk, following the Ethics & Values link or on PRELIMS’ own website www.prelims.org.

The little classics range print with two different manufacturers, both in China. One has already been accredited and the other is currently undergoing the audit which leads to accreditation.

I hope this will reassure your blog readers and will encourage them to keep on collecting!"

Thanks Luci!
