If you’ve read the Snowblog for any length of time you’ll remember about our SnowCase initiative, where we invite authors to submit 500 words of their work. We’re resurrecting it at White Magazine [cheers] and here’s the first one.
Rules on submitting:
- You can submit anything. We don’t edit or make an editorial judgement on your work, but if we think it’s too gross, weird, awful or somehow inappropriate we reserve the right not to publish it.
- We will not remove the postings on request, purely because it wastes our time and we’re busy people. Be quite sure that you want your work to feature on the SnowCase for all time.
- Email submissions to emma@snowbooks.com, and use the subject line ‘Snowcase’.
- Format the piece exactly as Jacqueline has done, below.

The Haunted
PROLOGUE
Death may be the greatest of all human blessings.
That was Socrates’ opinion, anyway. No one ever looks at it like that, of course, apart from just a few of us, perhaps.
The darkness engulfs me as I lie here, the silence overwhelming to my ears. Not even her gentle breathing as she lies against me seems to break through the wall of stillness that surrounds us.
I glance at her black hair as it frames her pale face, her beauty statuesque and not marred by time at all. But that is the exquisiteness of time itself, is it not? Does it not preserve all things in its own way?
Some thought or dream disturbs her slumber and she stirs in my arms, a deep sigh escaping her. Her breath is sweet and temptingly erotic, like always.
She is my lover, my life. My life is bound to her, as hers is to me. We are nothing without each other.
I have tried to live without her, God knows I have tried, and for reasons I never want to remember ever again. Yet my need for her drew me back to her time and time again, and this time I never want to let her go. I would do anything for her. Anything.
I am now restless, the thought of our earlier intimacy filling my mind, and now another, more powerful desire fills me; a desire I know I will not be able to resist.
I am ravenously hungry now.
Hungry for human blood…
